EMDR Therapy Franklin, TN
Your past deserves attention. It does not have to be the only thing you ever talk about.
I see adults from Franklin at my office in Brentwood, about ten miles north up I-65 at Maryland Farms. EMDR is a structured therapy meant to reduce the distress attached to difficult memories.

When old experiences turn up in present relationships
A small disagreement leaves you wondering whether somebody is about to leave. You hold back what you need because saying it out loud feels risky. You want to be close to someone and then find yourself stepping back at exactly the moment they get near.
And then there is the layer after that, which is asking yourself why you reacted at all. You tell yourself you should know better by now. You are very probably a good deal kinder to the people around you than you are to yourself.
That is a reasonable place to start. You do not need a complete history or the right words for it first.
What you might want more room for
Saying what you need without rehearsing every possible response to it. Being present with a partner or a friend or your child instead of braced for something. Treating a bad day as a bad day rather than as evidence about you.
Those are goals worth naming. They are not outcomes I can guarantee, and anybody who guarantees them is telling you something they cannot know.
What EMDR is
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Put plainly, it aims to make remembering less distressing rather than to make you forget.
It is one of the recommended trauma focused treatments for PTSD. The strongest evidence is for PTSD, and its fit for anything else needs a specific conversation.
Usually it does not require telling the whole story out loud, although processing does involve bringing parts of a memory to mind. For a lot of people that distinction is the thing that makes it possible at all.
During that work I guide short sets of eye movements, sounds, or tapping, and we check in about what you notice. The exact mechanism is still under study. There are eight phases, and eight phases is not eight sessions.
Questions worth asking before you start
-
Difficult feelings can come up during memory work, and can also turn up between appointments. Ask me about preparation, about how to signal that you need to stop, and about what happens afterwards. If something gets worse, tell me. That is information I need, not a complaint.
-
Usually not in detail, although you will be asked to bring parts of the experience to mind. That distinction matters a great deal to people who find talking about it the hardest part.
-
It depends on you and on how you respond, and there is no fixed number that applies to everyone. When it comes to trauma and anxiety, honestly, it is such an individual process. You are the expert on you, so I will be counting on honest feedback about what is and is not working.
-
That is useful information rather than a mark against you. Tell me what helped, what did not, and what would make it easier to speak openly this time.
-
No. Adults 18 and over only.
Getting started
Book a free 10 minute consultation and we will work out whether I am the right fit. If I am, we will schedule properly. If I am not, I would rather say so.
Sometimes that first step feels more frightening than the therapy does. That is very common, and it is not a reason to wait.
Call or text 615-905-6132, or email davesaunderscounseling@gmail.com.
I reply within 2 business days. Please leave personal health information out of the first message. It can wait until we speak.
