PTSD Therapy in Brentwood, TN
You may know the danger has passed and still find yourself checking the room, waking at small sounds, or bracing when someone comes too close. Trying to reason your way out of that reaction can be exhausting, especially when you've already told yourself many times that you should be feeling better.
I'm Dave Saunders, LPC-MHSP, NCC. I offer PTSD therapy for adults at my office in Maryland Farms, right here in Brentwood. We can start with what's happening now and work toward days that feel lighter and more manageable.

Recognizing PTSD symptoms
Posttraumatic stress disorder can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Unwanted memories, nightmares and flashbacks are some of the more recognizable symptoms. Others are easier to miss: avoiding reminders, feeling detached, blaming yourself, or finding it hard to settle even when everything seems fine.
The National Institute of Mental Health explains these symptoms in more detail. You don't need to sort out a diagnosis before contacting me. That's something we can look at together. If you're not sure PTSD is the right word, my page on trauma therapy in Brentwood covers the wider range of reactions after hard experiences.
PTSD isn't only for people with a military history. It can follow an assault, a serious accident, abuse or other traumatic experiences. What you went through deserves attention on its own terms.
How I approach PTSD treatment
I want to understand what an ordinary week looks like for you. How are you sleeping? What do you avoid? When do you feel most on edge? That gives us a clear starting point and helps us decide what you want treatment to change.
My training includes Level II EMDR and Brainspotting, as well as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. I also pay attention to how stress shows up in your body. We'll talk through these approaches and choose what fits your symptoms, history and comfort level.
EMDR is one of the most effective treatments for PTSD. It involves bringing a memory to mind while following guided eye movements or another form of alternating stimulation. Preparation comes first: we talk about what to expect and how to pause before working directly with a memory. You can read more about EMDR therapy in Brentwood. If worry and tension fill a lot of your days, you can also read about anxiety therapy in Brentwood.
Having a say in the work
Therapy asks you to trust someone with experiences you may have kept private for years. I take that seriously. You can ask why I'm suggesting something, tell me when you'd like to slow down, and share how each approach feels for you.
We may work toward fewer interruptions from memories, more restful sleep, or feeling present with the people you care about. Your goals will be specific to your life, and we'll keep track of what's changing along the way.
Questions about PTSD therapy
-
You can begin with whatever feels comfortable to share. With EMDR, a detailed spoken account is often unnecessary, although the work does involve bringing parts of the experience to mind. We'll talk this through before we begin.
-
We go at a pace that works for you. Preparation comes first, and I'll check in with you during and between sessions so we can adjust whenever you need.
-
Weekly is best, and every other week works well too. We'll review your progress together as we go.

Yes. My experience includes combat Marines, special forces and military support personnel. You're welcome to ask about that experience during the consultation.
