You do not have to be last on your own list
Asking for help does not require every other part of your life to be sorted out first.
Perhaps you keep telling yourself you will do something about it when work quietens down, or when the family needs less from you, or when you can explain what is wrong more clearly than you can at the moment. Until then you keep going, and you try not to let anybody see what that costs.
You may feel guilty for wanting an hour. You may notice somebody else’s discomfort a good deal faster than your own. Or you get to the end of an evening and realize you have been braced the entire time.
You do not have to judge any of that before you talk about it. "I am getting everything done and I do not feel okay" is a real starting point.
What EMDR is and what it aims at
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is therapy meant to make difficult memories less upsetting to carry, not to erase them.
It is one of the recommended trauma focused treatments for PTSD. The strongest evidence is for PTSD; other concerns need individual assessment rather than a sweeping claim. You are allowed to ask about treatment without knowing whether you have a diagnosis.
During memory work I guide short sets of eye movements, sounds, or tapping while you hold a chosen memory in mind, with check ins between sets. The precise mechanism is still being researched.
There are eight phases, and they are not eight appointments. Preparation comes first, and closure and review are part of it too. Wanting more explanation before you agree to something is not something to apologize for.
Fitting it into your week
103 Continental Place, Suite 204, Brentwood, TN 37027, in Maryland Farms. Nolensville is only a few miles east, which is the practical good news here. Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm.
EMDR and Brainspotting are in person only. I have found they are safest and most effective in the room, so that is how I work.
This is generally weekly, so the honest question is which hour of your week could actually hold it. Tell me what is immovable. It is much better to build around your real week than to book something that quietly collapses in a month.
Sessions are $195. No insurance, superbill provided. Cancellations inside 48 hours are charged in full.
Questions worth asking before you start
-
Difficult feelings can come up during memory work, and can also turn up between appointments. Ask me about preparation, about how to signal that you need to stop, and about what happens afterwards. If something gets worse, tell me. That is information I need, not a complaint.
-
Usually not in detail, although you will be asked to bring parts of the experience to mind. That distinction matters a great deal to people who find talking about it the hardest part.
-
It depends on you and on how you respond, and there is no fixed number that applies to everyone. When it comes to trauma and anxiety, honestly, it is such an individual process. You are the expert on you, so I will be counting on honest feedback about what is and is not working.
-
That is useful information rather than a mark against you. Tell me what helped, what did not, and what would make it easier to speak openly this time.
-
No. Adults 18 and over only.
Getting started
Book a free 10 minute consultation and we will work out whether I am the right fit. If I am, we will schedule properly. If I am not, I would rather say so.
Sometimes that first step feels more frightening than the therapy does. That is very common, and it is not a reason to wait.
Call or text 615-905-6132, or email davesaunderscounseling@gmail.com.
I reply within 2 business days. Please leave personal health information out of the first message. It can wait until we speak.
