PTSD Therapy in Nashville, TN
There may be places you no longer go, conversations you steer away from, or plans you back out of because you can't face another hard reaction. Each choice makes sense in the moment. Over time, though, it can leave you with less room to live the way you want.
I'm Dave Saunders, LPC-MHSP, NCC. I see adults from Nashville for PTSD therapy at my office in Maryland Farms, just down I-65 in Brentwood. I work with the memories, fear and physical reactions that can stay with you after trauma.

When avoiding reminders becomes exhausting
Avoidance is easy to explain away. You prefer a different route. You're too tired to go out. You'd rather not talk about that part of your life. You may have become very good at arranging things so you can get through the day.
With PTSD, reminders can bring back an unwanted memory, a rush of fear, or the feeling that something is happening again. Avoiding them brings quick relief, and therapy can help with the distress underneath. Reaching out is a sign of how hard you've been trying.
PTSD can also affect sleep, concentration, mood and closeness with other people. Some people feel constantly alert; others feel distant or numb. Understanding your whole pattern helps us choose what will help most.
Understanding what is happening
PTSD is a specific diagnosis with particular criteria, including how long symptoms last and how they affect everyday life. The National Institute of Mental Health provides an overview.
You don't have to arrive certain that PTSD is the explanation. We'll talk about what changed after the experience and what still happens now. A clear understanding helps us choose treatment that makes sense for you. My page on trauma therapy in Nashville covers the many ways hard experiences can stay with you.
Treatment that takes your pace seriously
My approach is collaborative. I explain the work, and I rely on your feedback about how it feels and how it's helping. We can begin with current symptoms and ways to calm distress before working with memories more directly.
I'm Level II trained in EMDR and Brainspotting, with additional training in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. EMDR has strong support as a PTSD treatment. It combines attention to an upsetting memory with guided eye movements or another form of alternating stimulation, and we prepare for that work together.
I also pay attention to physical tension, changes in breathing, and the urge to shut down or leave. These signals help us find the right pace, and you're welcome to bring all of it into the room.
You'll find more about the method on my EMDR therapy in Nashville page. If racing thoughts are part of it, you can also read about anxiety therapy in Nashville.
What we would work toward
Perhaps you want to sleep without dreading the night, stay through a family gathering, or keep the rest of your day after a reminder. Those are exactly the things to bring into therapy. They tell us what relief would mean to you.
We'll keep an eye on how you're doing outside the office, because how your week goes matters as much as what we talk about in session.
